5 Best Indoor Plants for Australian Bathrooms

April 06, 2026

Bathrooms are one of the best environments for Indoor Plants in Australia. While many of our favourite species originate in tropical rainforests under dense canopies, our bathrooms provide the perfect "micro-climate" for plants like Boston Ferns, Spider Plants and Calathea, mimicking the high humidity and dappled light right here in our own bathroom.

Why your bathroom is a plant sanctuary

  • Natural Humidity: Perfect for preventing brown, crispy leaf edges due to higher humidity conditions.

  • Lower Light: Ideal for plants that may suffer from sunburn in harsh Australian sun.

  • Ceiling Space: Hang your plants from the ceiling to take advantage of the space beneath to create a cascading, humidity loving beauty.

  • Natural Woods: Use natural wood stools to elevate plants.

How do I make watering my bathroom plants easy?

Watering your plants doesn't have to be a chore. By placing them directly in the shower or bathtub, you can keep your indoor watering routine completely spill-free. This method also helps to wash away dust so your plants can breathe and shine.

5 recommended bathroom plants

Ferns

  • Generally found under the canopy on rainforest floors, loving darker and humid environments. Perfect for a bathroom with little natural light and higher humidity levels.

  • Create a constant lush greenery all year around.

  • If they start growing too big, easily divide the plant for more

  • Some ferns are pet friendly, but not all!

  • Varieties of ferns include: Boston, Maidenhair, Birds Nest, Blue Star, Hare's Foot, Staghorn and more.

Spider Plants

  • Love high humidity environments and can tolerate lower lighting conditions.

  • Low maintenance – their leaves will droop and the colour of their leaves fade when they require a drink.

  • Pet friendly!

  • Grow 'pups' which are an offshoot or clone from the parent plant. These can be propagated in water or soil to grow a new genetically identical plant.

Calatheas

  • Renowned for loving humidity, where high humidity and moisture prevents the leaves from going brown and crispy on the edges.

  • Big variety of striking leaf patterns available to create a contrast in your bathroom.

  • Pet friendly!

  • Varieties of Calatheas include: Peacock, Eclipse, Pinstripe, Elliptica, Freddie, Burle-marxii, Rattlesnake and more.

  • Have the ability to absorb moisture and regulate humidity.

  • Ideal in a bright bathroom as they like a bright, indirect light placement.

Devils Ivy

  • Thrives in high humidity and can tolerate low light conditions, however brighter light conditions will produce higher variegated leaves.

  • Easy growing trailing plant – let it hang from the ceiling or trail over the edge of a stool, bath tub or counter top.

  • Low maintenance plants requiring low water, the leaves will curl when they are in desperate need for water.

Tip: In cooler climates like Melbourne or Hobart, ensure your bathroom plants aren't touching cold window glass during winter nights, as the cold glass can cause leaf burn.
